In January 2005, new safety legislation was introduced.

• All commercial fishermen must now attend 1-day safety training courses in Sea Survival, Basic Firefighting, Elementary First Aid and Safety Awareness & Accident Prevention in accordance with Merchant Shipping Notice 1813(F)

• New entrants to the industry must attend basic sea survival before going to sea, followed by basic health & safety, first aid and firefighting within the first three months after joining the industry.

• Details of certification and applicability to code of practices are contained in MGN411(M+F)

• New entrants to the industry must attend a Sea Survival course BEFORE going to sea for the first time. A one day basic health & safety course is also required. Basic Firefighting and Elementary First Aid courses should be attended during the first three months in the industry and the Safety Awareness course should attended during the first two years in the industry

• Once all of these Seafish courses have been completed, a laminated certificate of course completion, similar to an ID card can be obtained free of charge from the Sea Fish Industry Authority.
